What Are You Waiting For?

{Photo via}
Earlier this week, I ran into an old friend from high school and it reminded me of this post. We haven’t seen each other since senior year of high school (or maybe a year or two after that, but my memory fails me right now), which was ten (or eight or nine) years ago. After hugs and “hellos”, I asked her the typical, “How have you been?! How is everything?!” questions to which she replied:

“I’m... *sigh*… I’m… not happy. I’ve been working at my job for seven years and I’m… not happy. I want a change. I want to do something different.”

Two thoughts.

Number one: I’ve said this so many times before and I mean it – timing really iseverything. And I’m glad that we bumped into each other at the right time, in the right space because she obviously needed someone to vent to. I was happy that she was able to find refuge in our meaningful conversation. Even if it was for only 30 minutes. I knew that I needed to offer her words of encouragement. So I did.

Number two: There’s no time better than right NOW to start working towards figuring out your goals and taking the steps to accomplishing them. This is exactly what I told my long lost friend. Well, part of what I told her anyway. (“The good thing is that you’ve figured out what’s making you unhappy. That's half the battle. So now you can set your goals and work towards finding your ‘happy’.”)

As I was listening to my long lost friend and conversing with her, I couldn’t believe that ten years had gone by (or eight or nine). So much has happened in my life since then. I’ve been through so much, grown so much, learned so much. I’ve failed at some things too. But I’ve bounced back from them.

The thing is, time is going to pass anyway. Before we know it, it’s going to be two years from now, five years from now, ten years from now. So... we might as well use this time right NOW to figure out what we want in life.

And work.

A few days ago I posted this on the Mommy Delicious Facebookpage: Do what you LOVE! Period. There is a big difference between making a living and making a LIFE.

Which are you making right NOW?

  1. I am living my life! We do what we can from day to day to make things better for our family, but stop and smell the roses each day!

  2. What a great, positive post. You should be a motivational speaker. Seriously!

  3. "Time is going to pass anyway" -- my aunt said this to me when I was 17 and it always stuck with me. I don't think many people realize this!! & time seriously flies by (even though at times it doesn't feel that way), why not make the best of it and do things that are fulfilling so we don't waste it?

    Great post!! Xoxo

  4. What a great reminder that life is too short! I understand both sides. I had a miserable job and was afraid to leave without having a new job. I ended up quitting my job after two years of misery and took two months off as I figured out what I wanted in my next role. I have been in my new company 8 years and love what I do. I often look back and wonder what took me so long to make a change. Being happy at work impacts the rest of your life soo much.

  5. I am definitely focused on making a life right now. At the end of day money can't buy happiness. So, settling for a career that doesn't fulfill me and allow me to still be present in my family's lives isn't an option. It means lots of sacrifices and budgeting but I think at the end of the day my loved ones and happiness are worth it.

Glad you were able to be a listening ear to her and give her some great advice. It's always a blessing when you can be a blessing to others.

  6. that post inspired me before, and now since I'm in a rut, I'm inspired again. Thanks Alicia Xo Megan

  7. im totally in a mood of rediscovering what makes me happy career wise...i know its not where u am so that's the good part about focusing on life!

  8. Oh yes! I know all about the difference between making a living and making a life. I am currently taking the steps so I can quit making a living and be more satisfied all around. Never will I do anything just for the money again! Great post!

  9. SO funny, I just read a great article that said the same thing. There is NO better time than the present to make your dreams come true. PERIOD.

  10. Do what you LOVE! Period. Amen sista! This is my creed.

I love reading what you have to say!
